Simple versus complex relationships

Learn how layers differ according to simple and complex component relationships.

Ingredients in recipes

In a recipe, an ingredient is often contained in nested hierarchy of recipes.

This hierarchy may be a chain of simple relationships or complex relationships.

Simple relationships

Some ingredients are directly contained in the selected recipe, as a component of the selected recipe.

For such ingredients, the only layer is the selected recipe which directly contains it. Accordingly, the Layers column will simply show the name of the selected recipe.

Complex relationships

Some ingredients are contained inside other components, that is, sub-recipes in the selected recipe.

Furthermore, a recipe containing such an ingredient is often contained or nested within other recipes.

For such ingredients, the Layers column will show the name of each recipe in the chain of recipes. At the end of the chain is the name of the selected recipe.

Sub-recipes in recipes

In a recipe, a sub-recipe is often contained in nested hierarchy of recipes.

This hierarchy may be a chain of simple relationships or complex relationships.

Simple relationships

Some sub-recipes are directly contained in the selected recipe, as a component of the selected recipe.

For such sub-recipes, the only layer is the selected recipe which directly contains it. Accordingly, the Layers column will simply show the name of the selected recipe.

Complex relationships

Some sub-recipes are contained inside other components, that is, sub-recipes inside the selected recipe.

Furthermore, a sub-recipe containing another sub-recipe is often contained or nested within other recipes.

For such sub-recipes, the Layers column will show the name of each sub-recipe in the chain of sub-recipes. At the end of the chain is the name of the selected recipe.

Ingredients in menu items

In a menu item, an ingredient is often contained in nested hierarchy of recipes.

This hierarchy may be a chain of simple relationships or complex relationships.

Simple relationships

Some ingredients are directly contained in the selected menu item, as a component of the selected menu item.

For such ingredients, the only layer is the selected menu item which directly contains it. Accordingly, the Layers column will simply show the name of the selected menu item.

Complex relationships

Some ingredients are contained inside other components, that is, recipes inside the selected menu item.

Furthermore, a recipe containing such an ingredient is often contained or nested within other recipes.

For such ingredients, the Layers column will show the name of each recipe in the chain of recipes. At the end of the chain is the name of the selected menu item.
